Prior Permission From Government to be Required for Each Flight

November 28, 2007

This is scary….

The Article:

The Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security are quietly pushing for a set of crazy new rules. All travellers in the U.S. will be required to get government-issued credentials and official clearance before every flight, both within the United States as well as internationally. And Monday we received a new political action alert from Edward Hasbrouk, The Practical Nomad blogger who’s been fighting the plan (and who testified about it at a TSA hearing). “The international Advance Passenger Information System rules were published, as ‘final’ effective February 19,2008, with no further opportunity for public comment even on the changes from the original proposal.”

Hasbrouck sees this as a very ominous development. “The Department of Homeland Security can now evade debate on the similar elements of their Secure Flight proposal by claiming that it’s needed to ‘harmonize’ the domestic and international travel restrictions — as though travel within America was tantamount to and subject to the same government restrictions and controls as crossing international borders.”

The stakes are high — and air travel may never be the same. “The Secure Flight proposal also includes new and odious requirements that travelers display their government-issued credentials — not to government agents, but to airline personnel (staff or contractors), whenever the Department of Homeland Security orders the airline to demand them… ” That alone will create a huge potential for abuse. “The proposed Secure Flight rules would leave travelers hopelessly at the mercy of any identity thief who claims to be an airline contractor (subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc.) demanding ‘Your papers, please!’ anywhere in an airport.”

But your personal information faces an even bigger risk. “In addition, the proposed rules would leave the airlines free to keep all the information obtained from travelers under government coercion, even after they’ve passed it on to the government. Your personal data would continue to be considered, at least in America, solely their property. Not yours…”

According to Hasbrouk, the Identity Project — an organization defending our right to travel freely in our own country — has made requests under the Privacy Act and they “have uncovered many more details (and many more problems) with the U.S. government’s dossiers of travel records, which include everything from what books travelers were carrying to phone numbers of friends and associates to whether they asked for one bed or two in their hotel room.”

Unfortunately, Monday, October 22 was the deadline for posting public comments on the proposed rules.

But it’s never too late to express your outrage… against another act in the continuing project to turn the United States into North Korea.

I just have one thing to say…. Can I see your papers sir?

7 Most Evil Websites on Earth

November 18, 2007

Article:

When you sign up to a web service, do you know who you’re dealing with? A common rant of mine is when a company gets too big, they get…well… a bit evil. Here’s a quick run-down of websites that are going straight to hell…

1. Yahoo! – Search giant Yahoo! have plenty to shout about when it comes to being, well.. just plain evil. Their complicity in the arrest of Chinese blogger, Shi Tao hit the headlines when it was revealed they actively gave personal data to the authorities, who used it to convict and jail him for stating his anti-government opinions online. Is it merely a coincidence that Yahoo! subsequently bought blogging site MyBlogLog for $10M in an attempt to appease bloggers? I think not.

2. Facebook – Recent allegations that Facebook was funded in part, by VC’s with connections to the CIA, NSA and other US government agencies as a giant, socially engineered data-mining tool puts this sinister site at the #2 spot. A conspiracy theory, maybe.. but how safe do you feel adding your personal details, sexual orientation, political persuasion and a whole lot more onto a site like this? George Orwell rolls in his grave.

3. Myspace – Aside from the fact that Myspace looks like it was designed by Satan on crack, the evilness of this site is more than just aesthetic. Founder Tom Anderson, created the site while at X-Drive Technologies with current CEO, Cris DeWolfe; both were involved in spam allegations and spyware lawsuits linked to an application known as Keen Value.PerfectNav, which hijacks browsers, tracks browsing habits and creates pop-up ads.

4. Google! – With Google’s slogan “Don’t be evil”, you’d think the company would be a pretty safe bet when it comes to browsing, but some might say that monopolising all the data in the world, from search queries to browsing habits, books, maps and emails has the potential for abuse. Although not a patch on Yahoo!’s evil status, their censorship of china’s search results is pretty evil, and the lack of blogs in google.cn searches means they won’t be forced into the whole Yahoo!-esqe situation, but bending over to every dictatorial governent is a slippery slope and I don’t like it. Therefore evil.

5. YouTube – Evil because they were bought out by Google, and subsequently the site now goes down more often than a vietnamese hooker. Oh, and they don’t reply to emails. Evil.

6. PayPerPost – Ruining the internet for everybody, by making blogs nothing more than full-page ads instead of the honest, informative and socially acceptable sites they used to be. Also, customer support (which they call ‘Customer Love’) should be renamed to ‘Customer Whatever – ticket closed’. Evil.

7. ChurchofSatan – While not quite as evil as the sites above, this deserved a mention because they’re trying really hard to be evil. Yeah, they probably eat babies – but they’re only showing off. Evil…ish.

18 arrested in antiwar protest by veterans

November 13, 2007

Article:

More than a dozen members of an antiwar veterans group were arrested yesterday as they protested the exclusion of their message from Boston’s Veterans Day parade.

Members of Veterans for Peace lined up in front of a podium at City Hall Plaza holding antiwar placards, as color guards from Massachusetts military units and JROTC bands from across the state filed into Government Center for a ceremony, sponsored by the American Legion, to honor veterans after the parade. Some protesters wore gags, which they later said symbolized the fact that, while they were permitted to march in the parade, they were prevented from carrying signs opposing the war in Iraq.

“We were exercising our First Amendment rights,” said Winston Warfield of Dorchester, a member of the group. “The First Amendment protects free speech, even when you don’t agree with what’s being said.”

When Boston police asked the demonstrators to move from the front of the podium so that the Veterans Day services could continue, they refused. As the Boston Firemen’s Band played The Marine Hymn, several protesters were placed in plastic handcuffs and led away.

“Our free speech and civil rights are being abridged here,” said Nate Goldschlag, a Vietnam-era veteran who was among those standing in front of the podium. “We are veterans, too, and we should be allowed to express our opposition to this war.”

They fought for America and now they get hauled off like criminals. America is a sad sad country…..
